HAPPY HOLIDAYS: IN A NEW OLD-FASHIONED WAY
OCTOBER 21, 2008 TUESDAY (NEW ULM, MN) – Something special is coming around the bend for your Christmas holidays this year. What is it?.
It's a "new old-fashioned" CD-recording by southern Minnesota musicians, Molly and Sonny Boy.
The 10-track holiday CD is called, "The Molly and Sonny Boy Christmas Show.
What makes this holiday CD different than all the rest?
Well, first of all it's arramged in the "rhythm 'n blues grass" style of music, a genre uniquely created by Molly and Sonny Boy to differentiate them from the pack of commerical mainstream music artists.
“Rhythm 'n blues grass music” is an intriguing layering of multiple percussive instruments in a
counterpuntal, harmonic and melodic stream that is bouncy, happy and rhythmic.
Molly and Sonny Boy blend the familiar vocal lyrics of popular Christmas songs, including such well-loved favorites as "Do You Hear What I Hear," "Jingle Bell Rock," and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," with intriguing harmonica licks and phenomenal guitar-playing that will conjure up memories of cozy winters. tasty snacks and family gatherings around the hearth, while also tossing in some musical surprises, like a welcome burst of sunshine on a winter's day.
One such surprise is a lovely original holiday song they wrote, called, "Christmas Reminds Us."
In the spirit of "What Child is this?" based on the familar "Greensleves," Molly and Sonny Boy chose to use a traditional English melody, found in an old lament called, "Early One Morning," but created their own Christmas lyrics. The melody of "Early One Morning," is familiar to many, however, in Molly and Sonny Boy's arrangement the song modulates, or changes key over 7 times in the song.
